Where To Buy Run Flat Tires For Bmw

A growing number of new BMW vehicles are delivered from the factory equipped with run-flat tires. While many owners enjoy the peace of mind that comes with tires that can allow you to drive an extra 50-100 miles when flat, other owners prefer regular tires. So, can a BMW use regular tires if it came with run-flat tires?

Soon expect to hear about new run flats that are more comfortable to drive and less expensive. And, if you have an older car without a TPMS, you can still switch to run flats: A TPMS system can be purchased at an auto parts store for under $200.

Run-flat tires (RFTs) are built with reinforced sidewalls, which make them a lot stiffer. This is why they can be driven between 50 and 100 miles (depending on the type) at about 50 mph with low or no air.

Simply put: Spare tires and electric vehicles go together like beef hot dogs and grape jelly. Increasingly, one answer to this conundrum, in my opinion, is run-flat tires. They give drivers peace of mind, even though their weight may impact range.

Run flat tires work by using a much more robust sidewall construction. The stiffer sidewall is able to support the uninflated tire temporarily. However, driving on the tire without air pressure destroys it. In their marketing, makers of run flats try to compare older tire technology to their new, lower-profile tires with the stiffened sidewalls, and claim some safety benefits. We are skeptical. Blow-outs and complete tire failures on new, lower-profile, modern tires (not run-flats) are extremely rare.

The sounds of the car on the flat were the most alarming. It sounds like rubber crunching and is pretty loud. I ignored it. Keeping our speed steady and slow (about the 30 to 35 MPH speed limit) we got the car home OK.

Dealing With the Run-Flat RepairThe BMW dealer was much farther away than the local tire chains, so a local place became our repair plan. Travelling to the BMW dealer would have taken us close to our limit of 50 miles and it was also out of the way for our Monday work plans. Calling around we found that a local Town Fair Tire chain only 6 miles away had the ability to replace our Pirelli Cinturato P7 245/50/18 run flat. Here is the first point we wish to make. This was a puncture from a nail in the middle of the tread. If we had a spare we could have easily put on the spare, driven home and then to a tire place to have the puncture repaired properly (inside patch/plug, tire-off method). That would have either been free, or done for a nominal fee of less than $50. Instead, we are now looking at replacing a tire.

Comparison of Run-Flat to Other OptionsMy 2007 Highlander Sport could have been the car taken that day. It is exactly the same size as the X3, but with more interior room and more cargo room. That vehicle has a full-size matching spare on a matching rim. Had we been in that vehicle, my matching spare would have gone on, I could have thrown the flat tire in the back, or put it in the spare tire well under the rear of the car, and then had it repaired at my leisure for less than $50. Or I could have replaced it. I just bought tires for that car and they cost $130 each including tax. This run-flat scheme is supposed to be progress?

Another alternative would have been a temporary spare. This is the direction most manufacturers are now going with most models. At least with this option I would have probably saved the cost of the new tire. Also, had we ripped a side wall from hitting a road defect, the run-flat would not have been an option and we would have had to be towed twice. Once home, and then again to the tire place the next workday.

Why Do Manufacturers Use Run Flats?Manufacturers claim that run-flats save both space and weight. Baloney. I checked the specs of the Pirelli run-flat. Its weight is 33 pounds. The non-flat Michelin with the same specs is 26 pounds. That means a temporary spare weighing around 28 pounds would have been a zero-weight added solution compared to the run-flats. Also, a car this size with its massive cargo area can afford the small wafer of a temporary spare, or even a full-size spare, as my Highlander proves.

A separate but similar tire category is the self-sealing tire. These tires have an extra lining beneath the tread with a puncture sealant solution. When the tire is punctured, the sealant releases automatically to fill the hole and prevent air leakage.

Yes, you can! Replacing run flat tires with run flat tires is recommended but not required. If you do choose to swap out your run flats for conventional tires, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Thank you for asking us a question. As you can see in the article, there are 2 run-flat tires that perform well in the winter season and you can refer to them for your vehicle: Bridgestone Blizzak LM001 RFT and Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow Run Flat.

Run-flat tire repair procedures recommended by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) are the same for both run-flat and non-run-flat tires. USTMA does preface that by advising vehicle owners to consult the tire manufacturer for its repair policy and, if applicable, recommended repair procedures.

A spokesperson from Bridgestone Americas Inc. said EH2 (and EH2+) wheels provide bead retention characteristics desired by car companies; in many cases they help extend run-flat operating distances, particularly at reduced loads.

When you own a high end BMW, the thrill is driving it something else. Yet, your car is just likely to suffer from a puncture as any other car, because well, you are driving on the same road as others. However, the presence of run flat tyres BMW ensures that you are spared the trouble of changing tyres at the middle of the road, especially when you are getting late for a meeting. Of course, this is assuming that you do know how to change tyres!

The technology simply allows you to stay mobile inspite of having a puncture or a blow out in your car tyre. While specific distances will naturally depend on the speed of the vehicle and its load at the time, it is generally estimated that a steady speed of 30 mph will get you a minimum of 50 miles on a flat tyre. Built differently from conventional tyres, the weight of the car is supported on the stronger sidewalls for run flat tyres in the absence of air.

At Tyre Shopper, we stock an entire range of runflats by major tyre manufacturers. Since these tyres feature heavily reinforced sidewalls, it is always advisable to replace run flats only with run flats. However, these can be more expensive than normal conventional tyres. When you shop with us, we make sure that we give you the best possible prices so that you do not have to think twice about making your ride safer.

You can read a wealth of information about these special tyres and how they operate at Tyre Shopper. Most manufacturers do not recommend that you try to repair a run flat which has been used without air. Though repair is possible in very limited circumstances, most of the times, you would have to go in for new tyres. Ensure that you do not mix brands and get the right tyre for your car by shopping with us. We stock some of the most popular tyres and sizes in the run flat category and can assist you with fitting these tyres to your car.

The ribs in the sidewall of this Bridgestone Turanza run-flat tire helps keep the tire cooler if air pressure is lost. That lets Bridgestone make the sidewall thinner, which contributes to a softer ride.

There are several BMW owners who are unhappy with the Bridgestone run-flat tires that come standard on some of the new BMWs.There are claims of horrible cold weather traction, premature wear as well as noise and ride handling issues.BMW introduced those tires as "Tires with guaranteed mobility - RSC is the BMW safety technology for the future". RSC is on the emblem on the tire's sidewall. You can easily identify a run-flat tire, because of this RSC emblem on.

RSC tires mounted on extended hump wheels, in conjunction with the tire pressure warning system, that is standard with many BMW models. This represents a unique mobility concept for vehicles in this class by providing the maximum degree of active safety.

The self supporting tire feature reinforced sidewalls, additional reinforcing strips and rubber compounds which remain stable at high temperature.Depending on driving conditions, the driver can continue driving with deflated tire at speeds up to 80km/h for limited distance.

Run flat tires the new hype, promoted by car and tires manufacturers. You as a car owner may ask the question; Why? Car manufacturers have two things in common, increase safety and increase profit. It is for sure, the run flat tires are safer then the traditional radial tire. The second part the increased profit, they do it to try to scare you should you breakdown in the rain, snow and storm, etc.

You should ask yourself the question; How often did you brake down or had a flat tire in the last five years? (Radial tire technology is changed as well to the better.) If you think runflats are worth the extra money and you need the added safety you should not hesitate to use them.

There are some serious disadvantage come with run flat tires. The first is comfort the second is cost. The third, they are just a temporary solution compared to a full size spare tire. Currently run flat tires are not repairable. Even after a nail they must be discarded due to the bending (breaking) of the sidewalls. They tend to be harsh over bumps since the sidewalls don't flex, they are considerably heavier than standard radial tires, they don't last long compared to radial tires, and they are very expensive to replace.

Did you know some of the cars never had a spare? If you have no space in your trunk for a spare tire then you can use a high pressure pump with sealant supplied. For example some of the BMW M-3 /E46 and M5, E39 and MZ-3 models were driven with high performance radial tires since new. Most of those pump kits have never been used (we service many of these great cars without problem regarding to their tires as well). The question is, can you replace your run flats with radial tires? Yes you can without any problem, the only thing you have to remember is you will have to buy a above mentioned pump /juice kit which is manufactured by Continental tire, should be easy to locate one. 041b061a72
